IHI and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand Conclude Biomass Production and Fuel Usage Accord
IHI Corporation announced today that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) on June 4,2024, for biomass production and fuel utilization. IHI will conduct the study for biomass pellet production and combustion testing at the Mae Moh Power Plant in Lampang Province, northern Thailand. The state-owned enterprise EGAT owns that facility, which is the nation’s biggest thermal power station. The signing was during the 6th Japan-Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Energy of the Kingdom of Thailand held that event.
In March 2023, IHI and EGAT signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on efforts to attain the Thai government’s targets of carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. They have since extensively discussed and reviewed those endeavors.
Under this new accord, IHI will undertake the technical and financial assessments of selection and evaluation of manufacturers to produce wooden pellets from acacia and eucalyptus. Additionally, combustion tests at the Mae Moh Power Plant with those wooden pellets will also be assessed.
IHI is drawing on its technologies for converting woody biomass and other clean fuels to help power plants become carbon neutral and harness forest resources effectively. It will tailor various solutions that drive decarbonization at thermal power plants in Thailand and lower environmental impacts.
