Development of the 2 MW-Class Gas Turbine Cogeneration System Fueled Exclusively by Liquid Ammonia Wins the Cogeneration Award 2025 – Chairman’s Award (Technology Development Category)
- Demonstrating Social Implementation Feasibility Through Long-Term Durability Testing While Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions -
IHI Corporation and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. have received the Chairman’s Award in the Technology Development Category of the Cogeneration Award 2025, presented by the Advanced Cogeneration and Energy Utilization Center Japan (ACEJ)*1. The award was granted for the project titled “Development of the 2 MW-Class Gas Turbine Cogeneration System Fueled Exclusively by Liquid Ammonia.”
This achievement was highly evaluated for being the world’s first successful development of a gas turbine operating exclusively by liquid ammonia and for demonstrating, through successful long-term durability testing, that the technology has reached a level suitable for practical social implementation.
In 2022, IHI, together with Tohoku University and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), successfully developed and demonstrated CO₂-free power generation using a gas turbine system fueled entirely by liquid ammonia under the Green Innovation Fund Project / Fuel Ammonia Supply Chain Development Project of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
Beginning in July 2024, IHI conducted long-term durability testing assuming social implementation at its Aioi Works in Aioi City, Hyogo Prefecture. The tests confirmed that the system achieved the planned power output while sufficiently suppressing emissions of nitrous oxide (N₂O), a potent greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide (NOx). The results also demonstrated durability performance comparable to that of conventional natural gas operation. Electricity generated during the testing period was used on-site at Aioi Works. In addition, by utilizing low-carbon ammonia as fuel, the project delivered decarbonization value and contributed to decarbonization initiatives for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
Among decarbonized fuels, IHI is focusing on green ammonia and is working to establish the entire value chain—from production, storage and transportation to utilization—to accelerate social implementation. Building on the results of this development, IHI is also advancing efforts toward 100% ammonia combustion in large-scale gas turbines, in collaboration with GE Vernova.
