IHI and IHI Aero Manufacturing Group Hold Energy Conservation Workshop for Employees
March 15 this year saw IHI Corporation and IHI Aero Manufacturing Co., Ltd., hold an energy conservation workshop for employees at the latter’s headquarters works in Tatsunomachi, Kami Ina-gun, Nagano Prefecture.
This initiative was a first for the IHI Group, which aims to help combat climate change (see note for detailed link) by making its entire value chain carbon-neutral by 2050. It is thus cutting direct and indirect (Scope 1 and 2) greenhouse gas emissions from internal programs at its works and offices. It looks to halve carbon dioxide emissions from the fiscal 2019 level, to 127,113 metric tons, by fiscal 2030.
The workshop aimed to enhance mindsets and improve practical skills for energy managers at works to actively conserve energy. Four external lecturers shared their expertise with 33 Group employees, including 17 from IHI Aero Manufacturing and 16 from IHI and other affiliates.
Participants split into three groups to inspect key facilities at IHI Aero Manufacturing’s headquarters works. They identified energy-saving factors for all of the facilities including machining equipment, compressors, air conditioning equipment, surface treatment equipment, and electric heat treatment furnaces. The groups spoke with instructors about approaches to conserving energy conservation for each facility. The workshop identified several instances of energy losses in certain areas, such as for winter cooling operations and equipment standby during holidays to avoid malfunctions. IHI will adopt measures for these issues and advance energy conservation at works.

Feedback from participants was very positive. One found it fruitful exchanging views with employees from other Group operations while inspecting the site. Another said that the experience interested that individual in learning more about energy conservation progress at other sites.
In fiscal 2024, IHI plans to hold similar workshops at other IHI Group facilities. Through them, it seeks to create a structure in which site energy conservation managers spearhead initiatives to reduce energy consumption toward 2050.
