Awareness-raising Activities Both Inside and Outside the Group during Pride Month

The IHI Group conducts internal and external awareness-raising activities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in conjunction with Pride Month, an annual global event held in June to raise awareness of the rights of sexual minorities (LGBTQ+).
In fiscal year 2025, as part of efforts to further promote employee understanding and awareness of LGBTQ+ issues, we held three major events under the theme of “putting into practice.”

Rainbow Decorations

As a visual method of raising awareness of Pride Month and LGBTQ+ diversity among employees and stakeholders, we decorated the atrium of the IHI Toyosu Head Office building with rainbow colors that symbolize the diversity and dignity of LGBTQ+ people. We also displayed rainbow flags at participating business sites and affiliated companies. Employees particularly noticed the rainbow decorations in the atrium. We received comments such as “the decorations visually introduced diversity, made the concept easy to understand, and provided a meaningful opportunity to reconsider its significance.”

Screening and streaming of short film

We held a public screening of the short film Veils (directed, written, and edited by Erika Nakayama) in the atrium on the first floor of the IHI Toyosu Head Office building. We also made the film available for on-demand streaming for a limited time. Veils tells the story of a lesbian couple who want to have a wedding photo shoot. The film details the challenges and lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people in their daily lives, and encourages society to become more aware of these issues. The screening of Veils was an opportunity to reflect on issues such as diversity and dignity.

Lecture on psychological safety

The IHI Akishima Office invited Associate Professor Toshio Murase of Waseda University to give a lecture on psychological safety for employees. His lecture focused on creating a workplace where employees feel safe to voice their opinions, which is the starting point for performance by a diverse workforce. After the lecture, the President of the Aero Engine, Space & Defense Business Area, a manager serving as a workplace representative, and an employee from the DEI Group of the Human Resources Division also took the stage for a discussion on psychological safety in the workplace. The session also generated many questions from attendees, and a lively discussion ensued.

The IHI Group has been conducting ally*1 activities since fiscal 2018, and continues initiatives such as providing e-learning for all employees of Group companies in Japan and posting information on internal bulletin boards. As a result, understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people has expanded year by year. Over 3,300 people had declared themselves allies as of June 30, 2025.

Furthermore, same-sex partners are treated no differently than spouses when it comes to employee benefits and work systems. We also have a harassment consultation desk which accepts consultations regarding SOGI harassment*2, and have established various personnel systems.
Going forward, the IHI Group will continue to position respect for human rights and active participation by diverse human resources as important issues. Based on this stance, we will promote the creation of a workplace where all employees, including LGBTQ+ people, can thrive.

  • *1 Ally: Allies refer to people who understand and support LGBTQ+. Anyone can be an ally, even if they do not identify as LGBTQ+.
  • *2 SOGI harassment: Harassment related to sexual orientation or gender identity.
