Energy Management System for Local Production of Renewable Energy for Local Consumption

  • INAMURA Akinobu, TAKAI Norihiro, YANO Misako, HAMAGUCHI Kenichi, TAKAMI Akira

There has been a rapid deployment of renewable energy systems such as photovoltaic generation systems and wind farms in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is a high risk that many deployments of renewable energy systems may have a negative impact on the existing commercial power grid system due to large fluctuations caused by weather and time of day. The Soma IHI Green Energy Center (SIGC), launched in April 2018, is equipped with the Energy Management System for Local Production for Local Consumption, in which the power generated by photovoltaic generation systems are consumed as much as possible in the center due to restrictions that prohibit backfeeding to the commercial grid. This paper outlines and describes the features of the control implemented by the Energy Management System for Local Production for Local Consumption.

Development of Ammonia Gas Turbine Co-Generation Technology

  • ITO Shintaro, UCHIDA Masahiro, SUDA Toshiyuki, FUJIMORI Toshiro

To develop an ammonia/natural gas co-fired gas turbine, there is a challenge in compliance with environmental regulations of NOx concentration in flue gas. To solve the challenge, power generation tests have been conducted using a 2 MW-class gas turbine with a low NOx combustor. Power generation of 2 MW and a reduction of CO2 emissions with ammonia mixing ratio of 20% has been achieved. It has been confirmed that the NOx removal device can reduce NOx concentration below 7 ppm. The performance calculation of the heat recovery steam boiler using the measured data as an input value has also been performed. The result showed that the total efficiency of ammonia/natural gas co-fired gas turbine co-generation system can be kept at the same level as a natural gas fired system.

Development of Co-Firing Method of Pulverized Coal and Ammonia to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

  • NAGATANI Genichiro, ISHII Hiroki, ITO Takamasa, OHNO Emi, OKUMA Yoshitomo

IHI is accelerating studies such as "building carbon-free energy networks using ammonia as fuel" in the mission of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We have been researched and developed several items to construct the networks. This paper introduces the development of the co-firing method of pulverized coal and ammonia in a coal-fired plant. We have faced numerous challenges when using ammonia as a fuel. Among them, IHI uses its own large-capacity combustion test facility to evaluate the combustion performance, and through the feasibility study, identifies issues and examines countermeasures to realize ammonia co-firing. This paper presents technologies that have been developed for the global ammonia network that IHI is aiming for.

Mathematical Model and Algorithm for Optimizing Configuration and Operation of Energy System

  • KOGUMA Yuji, INAMURA Akinobu

This paper proposes an optimization method to find an optimal configuration and operation of energy system for facilities including factories and plants that consume energy in large quantities from the viewpoint of energy cost reduction with combining batteries, photovoltaic generation systems, and private power generators. It is not easy to optimize configuration and operation of energy systems since it is necessary to consider synergistic and complementary effects between pieces of energy equipment as well as the performance and the cost of the individual equipment. In addition to this, recent lively utilization of renewable energies increases options of configuration and it causes the problem to be more complicated. For this issue, we propose a general-purpose mathematical model and algorithm for optimization of energy system configuration and operation that considers implementation and provision as an optimization system that can be used for various projects.

A Low-Carbon Smart Society Realized by Locally Distributed Production for On-Demand Use

  • IHI Corporation

A technology that achieves a "local production for local consumption" society has finally emerged. This technology enables reduction in transportation of materials that are difficult to handle, such as hydrogen, and efficient production of such materials in the required quantities when they are needed and where they are consumed. Compact reactor technology, which enables downsizing and efficient production of chemical process products, will bring about a revolution in the field of production and transportation.

Applicability of Vitrification Technology for Secondary Wastes Generated from Contaminated Water Treatment Systems at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

  • ONIKI Toshiro, TAJIRI Yasutomo, MIMURA Takeshi, NABEMOTO Toyonobu, FUKUI Toshiki

Various types of radioactive waste have been generated in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) site. The purpose of this review is to reduce and stabilize radioactive waste by vitrification technology using Cold Crucible Induction Melter (CCIM) — especially waste with a high level of radioactivity such as secondary waste generated from contaminated water treatment systems in which the development of vitrification process using CCIM was carried out. This paper describes approaches to completing development of treatment technology for such waste including IHI’s activities.

World's First Variable Compression Ratio System for Large Marine 2 Stroke Engines

  • MASUDA Yutaka, HIROSE Takayuki, YAMADA Takeshi, TAKIMOTO Takahiro, MORIYAMA Kouji

The Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) system for 2 stroke marine engines can reduce fuel consumption and adapt to various fuels. Therefore, this system is a very attractive device for achieving a sustainable society; and it also won the award for Marine Engineering of the Year 2018. This paper describes the overview of the VCR system, verification results of the VCR system and engine performance, and finally the impact of the VCR system on a sustainable society. The VCR system is currently under development and being targeted for early commercialization.
