IHI Group’s “Ammonia Combustion Technology and Technological Development for Social Implementation” Receives Japan Institute of Energy Award (Technology Division) by The Japan Institute of Energy

IHI received the General Incorporated Association Japan Institute of Energy Award (Technology Division). The Award is given to researchers who have achieved particularly notable performance in the academic field of energy studies, or individuals or groups that have achieved particularly notable results in the field of energy technologies.

The award recognized IHI’s years of research and development on ammonia fuel combustion technology and the series of efforts IHI has taken to socially implement the technology. For these efforts, IHI utilized the Green Innovation Fund from National Research and Development Agency New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and the results of grant projects.

Development of the world’s first liquid ammonia single firing gas turbine.(*2)

Development of ammonia-fueled marine reciprocating engine and successful demonstration sailings of the world’s first ammonia-fueled tugboat “Sakigake.”(*3)

Efforts to create technical specifications(*4) (ISO/TS 21343(*5)) for international standardization to promote dissemination of ammonia as a global carbon-free fuel.

IHI has promoted the development of technologies to utilize ammonia fuel, which emits no CO2 during combustion and is expected to contribute to continuous development of future energy technologies. IHI will continue to work on developing ammonia utilization technologies to achieve a decarbonized society.
